October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 5, 2020

Mayor Kyriacou announced October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. See his message below.

Domestic violence comes in many forms. Typically, we think first of physical abuse, however this is only one of many ways a partner might try to gain power and control in a relationship. Domestic violence can also involve abuse or violence against children, parents, or the elderly. It takes a number of forms, including physical, verbal, emotional, economic, religious, reproductive, and sexual abuse.
There are many domestic abuse services available to Beacon residents. All Beacon police officers are trained in handling domestic abuse cases and they stay up-to date on domestic abuse case law. Our Police Department works hand in hand with the Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services. We have a dedicated part-time Domestic Abuse Response Team member who works in our Police Department and in the field with our officers.

Duchess County has additional resources, including information and referral services, advocacy, counseling, child care, selective support teams, family advocates, Latinex outreach services, and legal representation services. Temporary emergency housing is also available for victims of domestic violence.

The Domestic Violence 24 Hour Hotline is 845 485 5550, again that number is 845 485 5550. You can find that number and a link to all of the County’s services on our website at city of beacon dot org.
Purple is the color for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I invite everyone to stop by the Beacon Police Department to pick up a free purple light bulb and shine it on your property throughout the month of October.
