The Highway Department is responsible for maintaining the city streets and parks and for managing curbside trash collection.
SEASONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
During winter, the Department is responsible for keeping 59 miles of road clear for emergency traffic. Department employees also collect Christmas trees after the holidays.
In the summer, Department personnel water roadside flowers, sweep streets and mow the grass on all City properties.
During the spring and autumn, the Department collects bagged leaves left curbside.
ROADWAY MAINTENANCE:
To keep the roads in good repair, the Department regularly patches pavement with hot blacktop mix. Potholes can be reported to the City here.
Year round, the Department clears, inspects, and repairs more than 800 storm basins and installs and repairs street signs and poles.
Other responsibilities include removing dead animals from City streets, acting as and managing school crossing guards, hanging holiday lights in winter, and managing flowerpots and flags during the spring and summer months.
MUNICIPAL SEPARATE STORM SEWER SYSTEM (MS4):
The Highway Superintendent is the City’s MS4 Program Coordinator. Please contact the department for questions regarding stormwater or to report stormwater contamination or potential violations.
